Our Story: From a Simple Idea to Millions of Downloads

Toby started in 2017 as a simple idea to solve a common problem—managing the overwhelming number of browser tabs we all deal with. Created by Arthur Camara out of Axiom Zen (the startup that builds startups), Toby was born out of a need to streamline productivity and make the digital workspace more organized. Arthur worked with his friends and colleagues Benny and Guile, and together they turned Toby into a Chrome extension that quickly gained momentum.

What began as a small project within a venture studio became a hit, with Toby attracting thousands of users within just a few weeks. But as careers evolved, Arthur, Benny, and Guile had to move on to other projects, and Toby was put into maintenance mode. However, Arthur remains an advisor, continuing to help guide Toby’s new team as they carry the product forward.

Fast forward to today, and Toby has over 1 million downloads. What started as a productivity tool for managing browser tabs has become a staple for users all over the world. Now, Toby is managed by a small but dedicated team of six who are passionate about taking it to the next level. And though the scale has grown, the mission remains the same: to make digital workspaces less chaotic and more efficient.

At Toby, we believe productivity tools should be simple, intuitive, and accessible. Our mission is to help people stay organized and focused by reducing the clutter of open tabs. We listen to user feedback, improve constantly, and introduce new features that add real value to the digital workflow.

Meet the Toby Team

Our team may be small, but we’re fueled by a shared passion for making Toby better every day. Here’s a look at the people behind the scenes who keep Toby growing:

• Jad, our frontend expert, works from Dubai while the rest of the team is based in Vancouver. A creative at heart, Jad loves bringing ideas to life with fun animations and smooth interactions. When he’s not working on Toby, you’ll find him getting hands-on with pottery and woodworking. His favorite Toby feature? Definitely Save Session—it keeps his tab overload in check.

• Ben is our backend engineer, who’s all about efficiency and streamlining. His favorite Toby feature is Toby Links—the ability to quickly access frequently visited sites without endless clicking is a lifesaver. Outside of programming, Ben loves to ski and play his guitar.

• Gui, our engineering lead, has been part of Toby’s journey for a while. His favorite feature is also Save Session, although he admits that once he saves tabs, he rarely revisits them—just knowing they’re there gives him peace of mind. Outside of work, Gui is all about fitness, and he’s always lifting weights as a way to unwind.

• JP, our frontend engineer, is the go-to guy for keeping the interface user-friendly. He’s a big fan of Global Search and Save Session—two features that help him stay organized in a world of constant tab clutter. When he’s not making Toby better, you’ll find JP watching NFL games or catching up on his favorite sports teams.

• Summer, Toby’s product manager and designer, is inspired by hearing from the community about how Toby has improved their workflows. She’s constantly coming up with new ways to make Toby even better. When she’s not managing features and design, she’s a fan of yoga, rainy days, and helping her cats chase down the occasional bug.

• Last but not least, Yasmin (aka the person writing this blog 😉) handles all things user-facing—whether it’s customer support, communications, or community-building, she’s at the heart of connecting with our users. Yasmin’s favorite feature is Toby Links—a good shortcut is hard to beat! Outside of work, she’s all about bringing people together and spending time in her pottery studio.

What’s Next for Toby?

With over a million downloads, Toby has grown from a small idea into a tool that helps people around the world. But the journey is far from over. Our team is working hard on new updates, and we’re excited about the future. Whether it’s adding new features or listening to feedback from users, we’re committed to making Toby the best productivity tool it can be.
